McFleshman’s Saturday Summer Music Series, Over a Pint, brings you and the artists into beer garden to enjoy the warmth of their music and hear the stories behind the songs. We encourage a listening room where attendees can enjoy an intimate listening experience with each musician.
This week: Pete Henry

Peter Henry Fisk, b. 1985, is an American singer and instrumentalist. He began playing guitar at age nine, studying with Central Valley California's Craig Sorrenti and forming his first duo with Mom on the keys. By age thirteen, Pete had begun playing professionally around the Stockton and Modesto areas. At age sixteen, he was being recognized for his skills on the guitar, competing in different styles, and winning 1st prize at the Stairway to Stardom concert in 2002 with the rock group, Concrete Rose. In 2004, he received the Louis Armstrong Award and Most Outstanding Jazz Soloist Award as a member of the Escalon High School Jazz Ensemble.

Pete went on to study early music with guitar virtuoso, John Schneiderman, at the University of California, Irvine, where he earned his MFA. He was involved in a number of esteemed musical ensembles, including the UCI, OCC, & IVC Guitar Ensembles, and the Cal State Fullerton Orchestra. Meanwhile, he maintained a love and commitment to other traditions by attending blues, jazz, and folk jams around the state.

Since graduation, has Pete stayed busy as a professional musician, settling in as a singer with an extensive international tour schedule - opening act for Shine Delphi of Pennsylvania, Cowboy Diplomacy of Austin, TX and notable performances during the SXSW 2021 Festival at Native Hostel before Dave Chappelle. Though mostly a soloist now, Pete enjoys collaborating with other musicians often while sharing his one-man band arrangements of classics and original music.

Other accomplishments include compositions and sound design for screen, forming the band HIYA in 2013, the Ellenwood Kitchen Club in 2015, The Burps in 2019, and teaching guitar and music for the South Orange County Community College District. Most recently, he has moved to Southern Wisconsin, has completed two original, full-length albums, and has focused on guitar and mandolin transcriptions from early Americana to the latest contemporary songs.

McFleshman’s Saturday Summer Music Series, Over a Pint, brings you and the artists into beer garden to enjoy the warmth of their music and hear the stories behind the songs. We encourage a listening room where attendees can enjoy an intimate listening experience with each musician.
This week: Katie Pederson

Katie is a Nashville based singer and songwriter from Ann Arbor, MI. Surrounded by melodies played on her grandfather's Steinway and harmonies sung by her mom, Katie found a love for song at a very young age. Inspired by artists such as Sara Bareilles, Ben Folds, and Elton John, she began writing music in high school, combining raw, vulnerable lyricism with catchy melodies and pop-piano sounds.

In collaboration with producer Dave Douglas of Danger House Studios and Relient K, Katie brought her first project, “Happimess,” to life in 2013. Proving to be just the beginning of her songwriting career, the debut EP was followed by the full length album, "Loose Ends.” With a full band and a full house, the debut album was released at the Indianapolis Arts Garden as the first show of it's kind to be held in the space. Her song, “Different Couches,” earned her the title of “Song of the Summer,” by Indy’s “Do-it Indy Radio Hour,” in 2016 and fueled the “Different Couches Tour,” that followed. Katie’s collection of heartfelt tunes have provided opportunities for shows across the country with artists such as Mason Jennings, Will Dailey, Andy Suzuki and the Method, and Matt Giraud and earned her songwriting showcases at reputable venues such as “The Ark,” in Ann Arbor, and festivals such as “Mile of Music,” in Appleton, WI. Katie released her anticipated followup EP, "The Landing," in November of 2018, chronicling her struggle with always being pulled between making music and a more traditional career. Produced by Jake Rye of Social Recording Company and Sanctus Real, the title track was recognized amongst 19,000 submissions as the first place winner in the Country Category of the International Songwriting Competition of 2018.

As part of the winnings for this accomplishment, Katie was awarded a recording package at The Tracking Room Studio in Nashville, TN. After a full day of recording with grammy winning recording engineer Matt Leigh, Katie had a new set of songs to share: “The Tracking Room Sessions.” Highlighting "soaring melodies," and "songs of heartbreak and hope," as reviewed by the Stratton Setlist this project eventually was the catalyst for moving to Nashville, TN to further pursue her career goals as a songwriter in 2019.

Since the pandemic began, Katie has spent many weeks and months in her Nashville apartment writing songs for her next project to be released in early 2022. The full length album “Limitless,” tells stories of heartbreak and healing, with themes taken directly from her own battle with mental health, heartbreak and loss, driving across the continent to find herself again, to eventually end up in music city. Her song, “One Before the One,” was recognized as a semi-finalist in the Unsigned Only songwriting competition for 2021, and several of the songs on the record landed Katie on the, “Ones to Watch,” lists with the Nashville Songwriting Association when submitted for feedback during the writing process.

In keeping with her commitment to being authentic in her songwriting, she admits, “sometimes honesty is sad, but it’s worth it.” The lyrics weave stories that take us through the mountains of Western Canada, all the way through the forests and plains of the Northwest United States, resolving finally home, at the shores of Lake Michigan where she connected with producer Jake Rye, of Social Recording Company to record her new album, Limitless, set to be released in the spring of 2022.

McFleshman’s Saturday Fall Music Series, Over a Pint, brings you and the artists into our cozy taproom to enjoy the warmth of their music and hear the stories behind the songs.
This week: Emma Peridot

Emma Peridot is driven to create music that will capture the hearts of masses, all the while remaining unapologetic about who she is. Her alt-pop sound blends elements of pop-rock and electropop, and her lyrical content examines traditional themes of love, lust, angst and heartbreak, while also getting vulnerable about anxiety, self-doubt, and insecurity.

Her beginnings are humble; during her college years she began releasing music on Soundcloud and performing in small clubs and dive bars around Indianapolis and other nearby cities. But after securing an opening slot for Quinn XCII at Butler University, a confidence was ignited in her that she has something special. Fans have witnessed her hustle since then, and she shows no signs of stopping. As a young, LGBTQ+ pop artist, it’s all about the journey of documenting her experiences in a way that resonates with all those who feel misunderstood. She states, “If my music impacts any number of people in a meaningful way, that’s all I need to feel like I’m fulfilling my purpose.”

We Are The Willows Solo with Peter Miller

We Are The Willows Solo with Peter Miller

Sep 23, 7:00pm

McFleshman's Brewing Co.115 S State StAppleton, WI54911 Map

McFleshman's Brewing Co. is hosting a special Friday Night Music Event. During License to Cruise Peter Miller of We are the Willows will be on The McFleshman's Brewing Co. Beer Garden Stage from 7pm-9pm. Grab a pint, and enjoy the magic of The Beer Garden Stage.

Suggested $10 door to the Artist. All ages.

We Are The Willows didn’t begin as a band. It started as the solo project of Minneapolis songwriter, Peter Miller. A Collection of Sounds and Something Like the Plague, released in 2009, was Miller’s first effort under the name We Are The Willows. It’s an album about loss of religious faith and the act of reimagining the world without god. After the release of the album, Miller began touring extensively. Between 2009 and 2011 he played over 250 shows all across the country. Between tours Miller recorded, mixed and released the PLACES EP and began working on what would become the first full band album.
In 2007 Miller’s Grandmother gifted him over 350 letters written by his Grandfather while stationed in the South West Pacific during WWII. On tour, Miller would read the letters, take notes, and eventually songs started to form. Over the next 3 years, Miller wrote songs cataloguing his grandparents’ courtship during WWII. As the songs were taking shape, it became clear they needed instrumentation and sonic depth beyond what Miller could perform himself. He enlisted the help of longtime collaborator Jeremiah Satterthwaite to play guitar and co-produce the album as well as Hilary James (voice/ cello) and Travis Collins (voice/ bass). Together they spent the next year recording the 20 song concept album, Picture (Portrait).
Picture (Portrait) was released in two parts, in 2014 and 2016 respectively. The album garnered praise from NPR, the BBC, NOISEY, PASTE magazine, Buzzfeed, The Brooklyn Vegan, and USA Today. The band toured a great deal, including showcasing at SXSW, Treefort Music Fest, Summerfest, and supporting slots with Blitzen Trapper, S. Carey, PHOX, and Matt Pond PA. For Miller and the band, it felt like things were taking off.
Picture (Portrait) reached more people than any previous We Are The Willows album and afforded the band unforgettable experiences. It did, however, come at a cost. The strain of being an almost entirely DIY band became a heavy burden. Band relationships strained, logistics became overwhelming, and finances were not sustainable. After a disastrous tour in 2016, the band realized they had hit a ceiling and they took a moment to pause.
Concurrently, Miller’s mental health was deteriorating. He had struggled with depression and anxiety in the past but in the years of writing, recording, and promoting Picture (Portrait), both conditions worsened. Additionally, it was becoming apparent that Miller was in love and he was finding it difficult to manage his mental health and be a good partner. Understanding love and partnership while feeling depressed was a new challenge. He was anxiously trying to sort out what elements of his life were satisfying and sustainable, what elements weren’t, and what he could do to change any of it.
So the band, both creatively and personally, went back to the drawing board. Miller began going to therapy. The band made some lineup changes and drummer Josh McKay joined the group. They spent the next two years laying low and experimenting. They recorded with various producers in studios around the midwest including with Mike Noyce (Bon Iver, Tallest Man on Earth) at April Base Studio in Eau Claire, WI and with Zachary Hollander at The Pearl in Minneapolis, MN. They released a few singles and toured the midwest. It was slow going, but the band was rounding the corner of something new. New songs were forming and doing so in new ways.
Musically, the band was coming together with more clarity, consideration, and sense of self. The band discovered that the previous years, the ups and downs, had brought them together. They understood and trusted one another’s impulses. Miller made space for more collaboration in arranging and the band deftly filled it. Songs that Miller wrote on his own bloomed into something entirely different with the band.
Conceptually, the songs became a way for Miller to process depression, anxiety, the nature of love, and identity. In “Of A Kind”, Miller found inspiration in a commencement speech given by his favorite author, Zadie Smith. The song is about the self and its relation to uniqueness or being “one of a kind”. In “Where We Are Now”, Miller shares a lesson learned: that emotional honesty with self and others is the only way to true intimacy. In “Engine Oil”, Miller recognizes his projection of past pain in relationships onto his partner and how that act is motivated by self preservation. “Up & Down” is a celebration of love, partnership, and how he and his partner have supported one another through mental illness.
In October of 2019, feeling stronger than ever, the band went into legendary Minneapolis studio, The Terrarium to record with engineer Zachary Hollander. Things clicked into place immediately. The ease with which the band and Hollander worked confirmed that they were onto something good. In 7 days the band came out of the studio with a new record.
In the Summer of 2020, We Are The Willows released their 3rd full length album, Who We Are & Where We Are Now. It’s been a long time in the making. This album is a testament to being better for the people and things you love. It’s an acceptance of the things you can’t control and that there is no arrival, there’s only Who We Are & Where We Are Now.

As their original songs blend in with their own takes on Irish classics and sea shanties there is truly something there for everyone. They were nominated for the Wisconsin Area Music Industry award for Celtic/Folk band each year from 2017 to 2020 where they took home the award. The band lives to play live and bring the fun and charm of the Irish Pub meets the CBGB Club to every stage they touch. From bars, to festivals, playing with national acts, and headlining a night; the Roving Scallywags bring the fun and musicianship to every crown they meet.
“The band thrives in a live setting, including engaging their audience. From the moment they hit the drums and their guitar strums, the audience becomes part of their act. The band's energy is addictive, it's songs are funny, and the camaraderie within the band as they joke around on stage and poke fun at one another makes the show all the more amusing.” - Chris Rugowski (Green Bay City Pages, Musicfestnews.com)

This week: June Star Duo

Baltimore Maryland’s June Star (Andrew Grimm and Dave Hadley), with aching vocals and plaintive folk arrangements, comes off like a Smog-era Bill Callahan if he had chosen to dive inward or The Jayhawks if they were more keen to stark emotional realism. Grimm’s rich baritone voice and Hadley’s atmospheric, elegiac pedal steel brings a time-honored aesthetic to their unique tales of fractious love, quixotic anxiety, and the looming shadow of death. June Star has performed in Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, Washington DC and West Virginia. www.junestar.com/

Testimonials
What a fine show June Star put on in Fountain. Big, clean sound from just two fellows, a super-talented singer-songwriter & a pedal steel master. Andrew Grimm writes the band's poetic originals and alternates between lead and rhythm guitar. Dave Hadley's pedal steel harmonizes with Grimm's vocals beautifully, and his solos were often mini-masterpieces of beautiful & haunting soundscapes. Highly professional production & presentation, too, as you might expect from two veterans of the road. - Alex Albright, owner of R.A. Fountain (Fountain, North Carolina)

This week: Mira Goto

Mira Goto follows in the footsteps of today’s songwriting superstars, driving powerful lyrics along with catchy choruses throughout her catalog. The international, award-winning artist released her debut EP “Nobody Warned Me” recorded by legendary Ken Caillat (Fleetwood Mac, Colbie Caillat). The title track reached an impressive number 34 on the Music Row Country Chart as a debut. She's played in cities across the country, even taking her show to her wide fan base in Northern Ireland. Mira gained international attention on the live-streaming app Periscope, garnering 50k+ viewers per show every night. She scheduled her performances with the time change in mind to maximize her European audience. Since then, she has continued to grow and expand her reach across the country, and all over the world. In 2019 Goto won the NEXTies Musician of the Year, and in 2020 & 2021 she won The Santa Cruz Good Times' Musician of the Year.

In her own words, Mira strives to play mid-sized venues, “think 400+ people, a seated theater, in towns I've never been to, sell them out, and hear the crowd singing the words of my songs back to me. That's what success looks like to me. Of course I'd love a Grammy, but that would be the cherry on top of the sundae; a room full of "strangers" who are there to sing your music with you, that’s the magic. They're not really strangers if they know your music though, are they?”
