When we opened our doors in 2018 we had a public house vision centered on pints and conversation. In that, we embraced a British Pub business model which included paying staff a living wage that was not tip-based. We did, however, accept tips on behalf of charities throughout our existence believing it would be the best way to generate donations and to build community.
Fast forward 6 years, post a global pandemic, staggering inflation costs, and an economic landscape where "living wage" is getting harder and harder to meet from a small business perspective. So we have decided to change our business model and we now welcome tips for our incredible staff, without whom McF could not be what it is.
Our reasons are as follows: We cannot compete with $18-20 starting hourly wages that larger chains advertise ubiquitously. Tips are a means of leveling the playing field as we grow and move forward. For some time, our staff have been asking us internally to move to a conventional model so they can finally accept what money our customers routinely hand them. Often a customer will ask to leave a generous tip for incredible service, and staff have turned down the generous gesture.
Rather than tips going to charity, we will have a featured "Charity Beer" with proceeds of each pint of the selected beer going to a selected charity.
We are choosing to evolve to meet the needs of our staff and charities, as well as the wants of customers wishing to reward staff for excellent service. The pictures posted here show just a snapshot of the incredible staff we have who make McF what it is. These pictures and short blurbs do no justice to the incredible work our staff do pint after pint.
Finally, our customers will never feel pressured to tip. McFleshman’s guarantees that all staff will receive the same wages as ever, at a minimum.
These changes will be seamless to the customer, and we believe the change will greatly benefit our staff and charities. We wish to thank everyone for all of their support thus far, and can’t wait to see what we accomplish together moving forward. ...
